Reservoirs & Recreation Areas

We invite you to enjoy the recreational opportunities associated with our reservoirs, but it is important to remember that each of the reservoirs is a critical component of the Mongaup system. As such, the FERC licenses establish specific guidelines regarding the management of certain aspects of the reservoirs, including water elevations. We maintain these water levels based on best management practices to ensure safe operation of the system as a whole.

ALL RECREATION AREAS ARE CLOSED BETWEEN SUNSET AND SUNRISE.

Recreation Areas

The Swinging Bridge Hydro Project is comprised of three separately licensed hydro-electric power projects, located in the Towns of Bethel, Thompson, Highland, Forestburgh and Lumberland, in Sullivan County, New York. These projects, Swinging Bridge, Cliff Lake, and Toronto, include:

The reservoirs, which are the largest lakes in Sullivan County, are also the largest privately owned bodies of water in New York.

Consistent with the FERC licenses for these projects, specific provisions have been made at each of the reservoirs to provide limited recreational use and other activities consistent with the purposes of protecting and enhancing the scenic, recreational, and other environmental values of the project.

The panel on the left provides the current status of each of the recreational areas. Local homeowners and recreational enthusiasts should periodically revisit this website to ensure these water bodies are open for recreational use. Here's a key to understanding the status indications shown:

If the area is marked in RED, it is CLOSED to all recreational use.

If the area is marked in YELLOW, it is OPEN for limited recreational use. Any limitations will be posted immediately below the indicator.

If the area is marked in GREEN, it is OPEN for all recreational use during the hours from sunrise to sunset unless otherwise posted.

Caution: During periods of low inflow conditions, these reservoirs can be drawn below the minimum safe level for recreational use. For your safety, be sure to check the status of recreational services available at each reservoir before attempting to access the water body.

The specific locations of the public recreation areas, along with their current status, are identified on the map below.
