The Mongaup Hydro Projects are comprised of three separately licensed hydro-electric power projects, located in the Towns of Bethel, Thompson, Highland, Forestburgh and Lumberland, in Sullivan County, New York State. These projects, Swinging Bridge, Mongaup Falls and Rio, include:
The reservoirs, which are the largest lakes in Sullivan County, are also the largest privately owned bodies of water in New York State.
Construction on these projects first began on Mongaup Falls in 1924; with the final project, Rio, completed in 1931. The collective project system involves the entirety of the Mongaup River Watershed covering an area of approximately 210 square miles in the lower Catskill Mountains in New York State, with the highest elevation in the area north of Liberty and the lowest at the confluence of the Mongaup and Delaware Rivers.
